Chapter 374: Slap Her Face
Chapter 374: Slap Her Face
Susan Caldwell gritted her teeth, no longer able to maintain the smile on her face. She was starting to suspect that Vera Xavier had deliberately used those raw stones without any Jade to bait her into making that statement, just to humiliate her!
But on second thought, she dismissed the idea as impossible. Even the senior Jade consultant at her side couldn’t determine what the Jade inside the stones was like, so how could Vera Xavier have such a skill? ’It was most likely just Vera’s good luck, that’s all!’
Most people, when faced with such public humiliation, would either lose their temper or beg for mercy.
But Susan Caldwell was exceptionally skilled at controlling her emotions. She knew exactly what to say and when to say it for her own benefit, and she was also unbelievably thick-skinned. "I was just joking with you earlier. You actually took it seriously."
In her past life, Vera Xavier had witnessed Susan Caldwell’s incredibly high emotional intelligence, but she had never seen her be this shameless. However, Vera had already met the thick-skinned Cara Preston, and since Susan Caldwell and Cara Preston were good friends in her past life, it stood to reason they would have similarities. Thus, Vera wasn’t surprised to hear her say this.
Vera Xavier held up her hands and said, "Miss Susan Caldwell, from the sound of it, you must be someone who really loves to joke. Our bet was a joke, and making me kneel if I lost was also a joke. Tell me, when are you *not* joking?"
Hearing this, Alistair Forrest couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Vera Xavier turned to glance at him. He just smiled and said, "Carry on."
Susan Caldwell took a deep breath. "I’ve already apologized. Why do you have to be so aggressive?"
Vera Xavier said calmly, "Your jokes are a bit too terrifying. I’m afraid I took you seriously. And I don’t think holding you to your promise is being aggressive. After all, we have a bet in black and white."
As she spoke, she pulled the written bet that Susan Caldwell had penned herself out of her pocket.
Susan Caldwell was filled with immense regret. ’Why did I ever write that contract?’
Vera Xavier brandished the contract in her hand. "You have two choices. One, eat all those useless stones you cut open. Two, kneel and apologize to me."
Susan Caldwell wanted to do neither. Eating stones was impossible, and so was kneeling to apologize. ’I’m one of heaven’s favored daughters; how could I possibly kneel before someone?’
She turned to glance at Sylvia Jensen, hoping Sylvia would help her find a way out of the current situation. But Sylvia acted as if she hadn’t seen her look, remaining completely silent.
It was the first time Sylvia Jensen had ever seen Susan Caldwell so thoroughly thwarted and unable to lash out.
She knew Susan Caldwell well. From the very beginning, Susan had intended to put Vera Xavier in her place. But Vera had been one step ahead, turning the tables and cornering Susan at every turn. It seemed everything Susan Caldwell did was exactly as Vera had anticipated.
There were only three possibilities. First, Vera Xavier was simply too capable. Second, she was exceptionally good at reading people. Third, Vera knew Susan Caldwell extremely well.
Sylvia Jensen’s gaze deepened. She mentally crossed out the last possibility, certain that this was the first time Vera Xavier and Susan Caldwell had ever met. The two remaining possibilities alarmed her. ’Could a girl this intelligent really exist in the world?’
Seeing Sylvia Jensen remain silent, Susan Caldwell cursed her under her breath for being such a terrible friend. ’How can she not even try to help me at a time like this?!’
