Chapter 420: The Young Man
Chapter 420: The Young Man
A figure emerged from around the corner of the house.
It was a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy.
The boy looked at the pebble rolling to his feet and couldn’t help but squint.
But he still raised his head high, staring straight at Chen Xiao:
"I’m out, what do you want?"
Seeing the defiance in the boy’s eyes, Chen Xiao couldn’t help but smile.
But Lin Xi recognized him at a glance: "Jiang Le? Why are you still in the village?"
"I wanted to see if you police are really investigating the case, but after watching, I found you were just having meals and taking walks, not doing anything serious!"
The boy Jiang Le said in a deep voice.
Lin Xi didn’t mean to explain, instead, she spoke to Chen Xiao:
"One of the deceased, Jiang Pinggui’s son, he was only four years old when it happened."
"Was he involved in the blockade of the special task force during the day?"
Lin Xi shook her head: "He’s the only one who didn’t participate in the blockade."
Chen Xiao nodded and then beckoned to Jiang Le: "Shall we talk?"
Jiang Le said nothing, turning to walk in another direction.
Chen Xiao smiled and caught up to him, placing a hand on his shoulder, saying:
"Since you’re dissatisfied with us, let’s have a good talk."
"I don’t know anything; what I want to know, I’m waiting for you to tell me, but you haven’t done anything, so what is there to talk about?"
Jiang Le’s words took Chen Xiao by surprise.
This boy’s words seemed quite logical!
"You think we haven’t done anything, don’t know anything, because you simply don’t understand our work. You think eating is just eating, and walking is just walking?"
"Then what else?"
"Then let’s pick a place, and I’ll tell you why we eat, and why we take a walk afterward."
Jiang Le looked at Chen Xiao puzzledly.
Lin Xi quickly understood what Chen Xiao intended.
But her heart was not optimistic because the special task force had found a new direction for investigation from the start.
That was to find the commonalities among the six deceased!
In the first investigation of the Jingguang Tomb, due to the way the deceased died, the discovered tomb hole, and their autopsy results, it was confirmed that they died inside the tomb.
Since they died inside the tomb, with no traces of restraints or bruises on their bodies.
It was concluded they entered the ancient tomb by themselves.
Moreover, it was certain they entered the tomb through the grave robbers’ hole.
So at that time, it was determined that those deceased engaged in tomb robbing, which led to their dangerous deaths.
And in tomb robbing, it’s very possible they killed each other for profit.
So back then, such a determination was accepted without question.
Moreover, almost everyone’s minds were absorbed in the excavation of the Jingguang Tomb at that time.
Because back then, Marquis Jinguang’s Tomb was the first ancient large tomb discovered within Jiang Province!
But now the special task force has reinvestigated, primarily focusing on identifying the six deceased and why they entered the tomb, thus being killed.
Therefore, after joining the special task force, Lin Xi was the first to propose finding the commonalities among the deceased to see if anyone could be linked to them.
Unfortunately, though this was a good direction, after questioning the deceased’s families, there were no results.
Now, one of the deceased, Jiang Pinggui’s son Jiang Le, although skeptical after hearing Chen Xiao’s words, still followed Chen Xiao and sat on a stone mound.
As soon as he sat down, Chen Xiao asked:
"Why didn’t you join others in demanding justice from the special task force police during the day?"
Jiang Le said with disdain:
"Only fools would do that. If the special task force really finds anything, they’d notify us first. But before they do, we’re just wasting time if we insist on pestering the police!"
Chen Xiao was even more impressed by this boy.
"Do you think your father was such a person?" Chen Xiao asked.
Jiang Le immediately looked up, his expression ice-cold as he said, "Impossible. I asked my grandma and others in the village who knew my dad. They said my dad was honest, never had a red face with anyone, and never did anything illegal or criminal!"
"And we’re not poor. My dad didn’t need to do anything for money!"
Jiang Le said confidently.
Chen Xiao didn’t refute but asked, "Do you still remember what your dad looked like?"
This question Jiang Le hadn’t heard from other police, making him pause before saying:
"Why do you always like to ask pointless questions and do pointless things?"
Chen Xiao smiled: "Just answer me, do you remember what he looked like clearly?"
Jiang Le actually wanted to avoid it.
But he couldn’t help but recall that lofty figure already out of his reach in his mind.
"I remember a little, but not very clearly. But on the day he left, he held me the whole day. He used to work all the time, and it was always my mom who took care of me. That day was the first time he held me like that. Many times when I recall that scene, I thought I dreamt it."
"But I asked my grandma, and she said that’s how my dad was that day."
Seeing the obvious sadness on Jiang Le’s face, Chen Xiao couldn’t help but pat his shoulder and say:
"After he left, how did your family get by all these years?"
"Mom went to work too, taking odd jobs for others. Mixing cement under the sun, moving bricks, she does everything. When the police notified our family this time, Mom didn’t want to come. She said people who are gone are gone, and she can’t afford to miss work for a few days, she has to earn money!"
Chen Xiao nodded: "So you came secretly?"
"Yes, I left a letter for my mom, then she called the police, but never asked about me again."
Speaking, Jiang Le was puzzled: "But I still don’t understand why my mom does this. This is the one chance to clear my dad’s name. I don’t want to carry the label of a tomb robber’s son anymore. People have always mocked me for that from childhood to now!"
Saying this, Jiang Le clenched his fists.
Chen Xiao sighed and said: "Your mom is thinking about the present, or maybe she became numb after all these years."
Jiang Le clenched his fist tighter: "You’re wrong, Mom isn’t numb, she misses Dad even more than I do."
Chen Xiao thought that everyone finds their own way to cope after life changes.
Jiang Le wasn’t wrong.
His mom wasn’t wrong either.
After all, the whole family’s livelihood depended on one woman.
And after so many years, hope might have risen, but hope can’t compare to having food to eat now.
But what Chen Xiao didn’t expect was his understanding was completely wrong!
Jiang Le suddenly released his tightly clenched hands, then lowered his head, his voice filled with regret and helplessness:
"Mom just wants to earn money to save my life."
"But I don’t have long to live. I overheard the doctors and Mom talking, the doctor said I have at most six months to live!"
"So I want to find out in the remaining time whether Dad was truly a thief!"
