Chapter 405 - 277: Plant Beastman and Mother
Chapter 405 - 277: Plant Beastman and Mother
"Her life force is gradually fading. Why don’t you let me try?" A young boy walked in from the doorway. After observing everything in the room, he spoke softly.
He wasn’t a Beastman child. There wasn’t a single beast-like feature on his entire body. The only striking thing about him was his fluffy, elegant, dark green curly hair.
The little boy was delicate and beautiful. His emerald-gem-like eyes were somewhat dull and listless. His skin was too pale, giving him a somewhat sickly appearance, and his frame was slender and frail.
His lips were a little pale and chapped, as if he were constantly dehydrated.
"...Ze Mu?" Chi Li turned his head in surprise, his expression complicated.
Ze Mu, the only known plant-type Beastman in the world, was the personification of the Beast God Flower from all those years ago. No one knew what pact he had triggered to suddenly turn into a Beastman.
This was something Chi Li, who had conscientiously watered and fertilized the flower for years, found hard to accept for a very long time.
"So this is the female who ate my fruit back then." Ze Mu walked curiously to the bedside to observe her closely, propping his arms on the edge of the bed.
This was the first time he had seen her from this perspective. She was indeed a little different from his memory of her.
"If we had a Beast God Fruit right now, we might be able to save her. But the Beast God Fruit only bears fruit once every hundred years. In her current state, she probably won’t even live for a month." Ze Mu shook his head. "However, she ate my Beast God Fruit back then and successfully integrated it. That means her body’s tolerance for foreign Energy is quite high. Perhaps my blood can help extend her life."
"You want to exchange blood with her?"
Chi Li stepped forward and blocked him, his brows furrowing coldly. In a sharp, stern voice, he said, "Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. You like to drink the blood of Beastmen, especially females. Don’t even think about using this as an excuse to indulge yourself!"
"Don’t think so poorly of me. After all, she’s the one who used to water me. How could I repay her kindness with malice?" Although he said this, he couldn’t help but lick his lips as he looked at the white fox on the bed. "But there’s one thing you might be mistaken about. If I don’t exchange blood with her, she only has a few days left to live. The final outcome is still death."
Chi Li didn’t speak, but his expression gradually softened, and his raised arm slowly lowered.
"...How do you plan to exchange the blood?"
Ze Mu snorted. "Of course, we can’t do a full exchange. Otherwise, she’ll become a plant, which is no different from being dead. But if I replace a portion of her blood with mine, the life-filled blood entering her body can extend her life by a few days."
"A few days of life?" ’That just treats the symptoms, not the root cause. If they can’t find a fundamental solution, she’ll still die from her fading life force.’
"Unless we can find someone with the same bloodline as her, this is the only way." Ze Mu suppressed the burning heat and the desire to drink that rose in his eyes. He genuinely intended to help her; he still had a good impression of the female who had diligently watered and fertilized him back then. "And we can’t exchange blood too many times. Although I can digest any Beastman’s blood, a normal Beastman can’t digest mine. If too much of her blood is replaced, she’ll very likely turn into a ’plant’."
"This is just a stopgap measure. If we really want to save her, we have to find what her body is truly missing."
Chi Li looked at him sharply, his hands clenching unconsciously inside his sleeves. "...Missing something?"
Ze Mu nodded. "I can feel it. She’s missing two things: a part of her Soul, and... her complete Soul blood."
The Soul and Soul blood are the foundation of a Beastman’s existence.
The Soul represents memories, thoughts, and spirit, while the Soul blood maintains the body’s normal functions and healing ability.
’No wonder her body is so weak...’
’Then, where in the world did her Soul and Soul blood get lost?!’
Before the storm of shock in Chi Li’s heart could settle, the door was pushed open again. He turned his head and saw a familiar little figure.
"Uncle Fox, we brought some herbs! We just dug them up, but don’t worry! We’ve already washed all the mud off the roots. Take them if you need them!" The second brother thrust a fully packed bamboo basket at him, then turned and ran toward the bed.
Chi Li’s brow twitched. He held his breath. "’Uncle?’" He grabbed the back of the second brother’s neck. "How many times have I told you? Call me Big Brother."
"But you’re clearly about the same age as my father!" the second brother retorted confidently.
"If I hear you call me ’Uncle’ one more time, you can forget about passing your herbology theory class this year. Also, don’t be in such a hurry to run off. Come here first and let me see if the herbs you dug up are any good." Chi Li placed the basket on the table and casually picked through it. He had expected a pile of useless weeds, but to his surprise, they were actual medicinal herbs.
’Huh.’
’Hasn’t this second cub’s herbology theory always been pretty bad?’
"I was the one who found these herbs," came a timid voice from the doorway. It was the third brother.
"And I dug them up!" the eldest brother jumped in.
Chi Li raised an eyebrow. "Have you three finished your schoolwork for today? What are you doing running over here?" ’When they were little, they were terrified of the bitter medicine he fed them whenever they got sick. They used to run the moment they saw him.’
"W-we came to see the injured little Beastman. We heard it was a fox cub, and we were curious... ah, no! We wanted to help, too!" the three little ones declared righteously. At the same time, the three of them couldn’t help but sneak a peek at the bed, their eyes falling upon the unconscious little white fox.
The three little ones froze.
"Huh." The second brother was the first to snap out of it. He couldn’t resist nudging the third brother with his elbow. "Don’t you think its beast form looks a lot like yours? Could it be from the same clan as you?"
"I’m a wolf!" the third brother retorted. Their father was a wolf, so he was a wolf too.
"How can you be a wolf? You’re obviously a fox! Father even said you probably took after Mother’s beast form. Otherwise, why haven’t you grown much at all?"
At the mention of this, the third brother’s eyes couldn’t help but redden. He was the smallest of the three. His beast form was about the same size as a newborn cub’s, not the least bit majestic or imposing, and a far cry from the father he idolized.
The beast form of the eldest, the strongest of the three, was already close to that of a normal adult wolf. The second brother’s beast form was also impressive. Only his looked fragile and incredibly weak.
’Did I really take after Mother?’ The third brother was often confused by this, but searching through the few memories he had, he couldn’t find a definitive answer.
Their mother had left when they were very, very young. Back then, they were just clueless newborn cubs. Their mother had only been with them for a few short months before she was taken away by the great Beast God.
Now, ten years had passed, and the sound of their mother’s voice and the image of her face had gradually blurred in their memories, leaving behind only the silhouette of a gentle figure.
